There is a torrent of messages appearing on the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation social media appealing for them to withdraw from the Croke Park talks following the withdrawal of 4 other unions.
Repeated calls to ‘walk out you have no mandate’ are going unanswered and the only official statement is as follows:
Four unions, the INMO, IMO, CPSU and Unite, left the talks this evening and held a press conference just before the evening news. The teacher union negotiators met, following a meeting of the Public Services Committee of ICTU, and were clear that there are significant issues in play which have the potential to deliver gains to some members. In addition, with reiteration from government that cuts to salary will be imposed in the event of failure to agree proposals for an agreement, the INTO and other teacher unions remain in talks with a view to protecting members to the greatest extent possible. This is the position of the great majority of public service unions. LRC personnel also remain at these talks and continue to draft proposals on the key issues in light of the positions as set out by government and unions. As of now it appears these talks may go on through the night.

As the person responsible – on behalf of the group- for the NQT/SEAS group, I only wish more sites like rabble.ie would spread the anger against the teaching unions…

The only thing any unions will achieve by staying in the talks is to agree on how much their members will be cut. If they truly want to defend their members, walk out, unite, and prepare a campaign of resistance, including escalating general strikes. Any other path for trade union leaders is one of either criminal stupidity or outright treachery.

So much for the INTO being Impartial in the talks, they might as well have been on the side of the government…
