Richard E. Grant & Richard Griffiths

Richard E. Grant & Richard Griffiths

Many of us who spent our formative years in the bedsits of the North Circular Road or Rathmines, the freezing flats and squats from Kilburn to Galway remember fondly our first introduction to Uncle Monty.

Richard Griffiths who played the inimitable Uncle Monty in the cult classic Withnail and I has died. He’ll be known to younger audiences for his role in Harry potter nonsense but for a lot of us rabblers he’ll be the one we think of the next time someone attempts a Cumberwell Carrot. Here is a HD version of Withnail & I for your Good Friday viewing. Do it. Was he a great actor? Let Monty have his say :

Well, I’d hardly say that. It’s true, I crept the boards in my youth. But I never really had it in my blood, and that’s what’s so essential, isn’t it, theatrical zeal in the veins. Alas I have little more than vintage wine and memories. It is the most shattering experience of a young man’s life when one morning he awakes and quite reasonably says to himself “I will never play the Dane.” When that moment comes, one’s ambition ceases. Don’t you agree?

  1. Aw! 🙁 Was it a ‘firm young carrot’ that got him in the end? Withnail and I one of my all time favourite films
