Sarah Palin marked Martin Luther King day with the above message – imploring Obama to stop ‘playing the race card’.

You couldn’t make it up. You can leave her your thoughts here .

  1. It’s outrageous, sure, but it’s also a very well established trope of the US right dating to the reactionary defence against affirmative action. Reagan referred several times in speeches to ‘just wanting what MLK wanted, a color-blind society’. Post civil rights, the tactic was to affirm that civil rights had indeed triumphed, and therefore the nation’s story began on a clean page. Racism had been defeated, and therefore race was not something that needed to be mentioned, never mind addressed. MLK was very consciously appropriated and presented as a figure desiring a national unity of colorblindness and individual opportunity (‘content of character’) rather than one mired in the past. This is in some part why that line, as opposed to say, the sweltering heat of oppression’ has become so iconic. So this line has been pressed into the service of a politics mobilized to make the legacies and structuring consequences of racism vanish, to position black activists insisting on an analysis of racism as ‘playing the race card’, and to frame affirmative action and related programmes as ‘reverse racism’. Palin has just rehashed the script.

  2. bitch is insane in the membrane. MLK wouldnt have approved of O’Bomba’s warmongering tho would he? MLK was a peace activist.

  6. Best comment: from a girl called kim “Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children.” -MLK jr

If he had been alive today you would have relentlessly attacked him, see unlike the Democrats he actually advocated socialism. He took a stance against war, racism and poverty not only in words but in action. You have more in common with those who sought his death than you ever did with Martin Luther King Jr.
