The Justice for the Greyhound Workers group reports that a picketing Greyhound worker, James Burke, has suffered a severe spinal injury in a hit and run at the company’s depot gates.

This statement was posted on Facebook late yesterday:

A locked out Greyhound striker was hospitalised with a severe spinal injury after being hit by a van as it exited the company’s depot in Knockmitten, west Dublin, yesterday (Tuesday, 22nd July) morning.

SIPTU member, James Burke, was participating in an official picket outside the depot with his colleagues when he was hit by the van. An ambulance was called and the 42 year old, father of three was taken to Tallaght Hosptial. He is currently awaiting medical advice on whether surgery is needed on a serious fracture to his shoulder. James is unable to sit up in bed and is expected to remain in hospital for several days and possibly weeks.

SIPTU Utilities and Construction Organiser, Owen Reidy, said: “This is the third incident of a Greyhound worker taking part in an official picket being hit by a vehicle being driven out of a company facility. James has been very severely injured. However, he is also lucky because the medical opinion is that he could very easily have been left paralysed by this incident.

“We are calling upon the Buckley brothers, who own Greyhound Recycling and Recovery, to end this lockout now and allow the workers to return to their jobs on their existing terms of employment. Once this is done, the workers’ representatives and management can sit down and engage in serious negotiations, free from the growing rancor that surrounds this dispute”.

The workers have been locked out at the waste disposal company since 17th June. Management at the company is attempting to force workers to accept wage cuts of up to 35% and has employed strikebreakers to carry out waste collections during the dispute. SIPTU has 70 members in the company which has a contract to collect household waste for Dublin City Council.
