What would be extraordinary scenes in a functioning democracy occurred as Minister for Environment Alan Kelly walked out on debate about water charges.

Leaving just four government representatives on the benches of the Dáil to face the entire opposition. Kelly, the Taoiseach and Tánaiste all left while the Fianna Fáil spokesperson Barry Cowen was beginning his questioning of the Minister. Then they left and the Dáil was suspended.

Reports also that hundreds of cops are circulating inside and outside Leinster House as protests build.

  1. Fuck them . If they were so convinced their and would work the least they could have done was stayed for a debate

  2. If they leave, willingly, could someone table a motion of no confidence in the government in their absence? If they’re not there to vote against it because they went home early that’s their fault!

  3. It pains me to say it, but that’s the first sensible thing I’ve heard FF say in a long long time. It’s a disgrace the way in which debates or lack thereof are conducted in the dail chamber.

  4. If I walked out in the middle of my work, I wouldn’t have a job in the morning.

  5. This is absolutely insane. The corruption I can sort of understand, it’s business as usual and that’s how things are, but to be so blatant about it is just beyond insulting.

  6. I for one wont either register or pay
The contempt they have for us is unbelievable. Tiocfidh ar la!!

  7. Did the Irish Times describe this as ‘the Opposition’ walking out..?

  8. A system of governance by representatives was always going to be hijacked by the rich and powerful and used to turn the law against us. The system never did truly work for us. It’s irreparably broken. The only thing that has changed recently is that those in power are now openly showing that they don’t care a shit about us, as long as they can profit.
