Union Flag raised in Tallaght

Two Linfield fans arrested following clashes with gardai at Setanta Sports Cup tie with Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght.

A garda was thrown from his horse outside the stadium. The garda was taken to hospital as a precaution but thought not to be injured.

Linfield supporters ran a Union flag up a flag pole inside the ground and incurred on the pitch to celebrate their single goal in a 4-1 drubbing. Reports have it that Linfield supporters (the clubs fans affiliate themselves closely with Glasgow Rangers) clashed with Gardaí before leaving for buses.

The Linfield end sang sectarian songs with lines such as ‘Bobby Sands, he died for no reason’, ‘Up to our necks in fenian blood’ and others. Shamrock Rovers replied with some pro-IRA chanting.

It was the first meeting between Rovers and Linfield since a 1984 European Cup tie.
