Clare Daly & Joe Higgins may lose their seats for opposing tax

A report in today’s Sunday Times claims that TDs opposing the Property Tax could lose their seats if re-elected and will have the tax taken directly from their salaries.

Another controversial paragraph that rabble highlighted prior to the law’s enactment will see the very wealthy escape much of the tax. For instance Minister for Health, James Reilly, as well as benefiting from tax breaks to subsidise the upkeep of his heritage home Loughton House will also be exempt from the tax on 149 of his 150 acres.

Some Fine Gael members and supporters claim that this exemption is to ensure that our food producers (farmers) can continue to feed the country. However, this is a residential property tax and so agricultural land is already exempt.

When speaking about the disgraced former Fine Gael Minister Michael Lowry and his extensive lands, walled gardens and expansive mansion, Richard Boyd Barrett criticised the exemption to which Enda Kenny replied

“The deputy is entitled, given that Ireland is a country in which there is plenty of land to have the space to stand outside his house and look back to see if it’s been painted properly.”

He’s hilarious.
