The Standing Man

The Standing Man

This image has sparked another surreal turn in the ongoing protests in Turkey. The man stood in the middle of Taksim Square facing the Ataturk building and remained there without moving for six hours, so far.

The image spread across Turkey and then internationally and now similar silent, standing protestors have joined him. Police have mobilised TOMA water cannon vehicles and it is feared this symbolic gesture is about to be attacked to add to the bloodshed inflicted on civilans by police and govt thugs.

The symbolic passive protest is spreading with people in other cities now standing silently in protest. It is coming towards 1am in Turkey and the following images are spreading on the #standingman hashtag on Twitter.

    1. Not to undermine that man’s plight, but there’s noone being murdered by the government in Ireland. Plus there’s fuck all else for doing in Tralee anyway.

  1. Standing Man, Erdem Gündüz, was arrested in the early hours of the morning. Others were arrested too, reportedly released later. Standing in silence now illegal in Turkey.
