Under The Tree.

spar

One of our readers sent us in this sorry tale of penny pinching by a Spar store on Capel St. It seems you’ll find everything under the tree bar a one cent coin.

It touches on some of those calls for one cent coins to be scrapped last year. Here’s what Hipnosis had they had to say for themselves:

“Pissed off, I rarely venture into that Spar on Capel St. Rip off republic so it is. But sometimes I have a hankering for a packet of Tayto on the way home from work. I’ve been hit twice by this now. The lad behind the counter refusing to give me back me penny change. Is this legit or a swindle of the highest order? Its happened two or three times in the past month. Go fucking raid a Dr Quirkies you cheap pricks.”

Poor Hipnosis. I’m sure next time just find out how amenable the Spar is to being shortchanged instead.

So dear readers, how common is this and what do you advise?

  1. The same thing happened to me in the bookshop Hodges Figgis on Dawson st. I think it’s a great thing, who the feck really wants a one cent coin????? Half the country have visited Australia/New Zealand and their system works perfectly fine – just round your bill to the nearest five cent – and scrap the coppers. Simples.
