Just weeks after the general election shock in which he came so close to returning to power, Italy’s former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to one year in jail after a wiretap trial linked to a 2005 banking scandal.
He was found guilty of wiretapping and releasing the tapes to his brother’s newspaper for publication. His brother received a two year sentence.
Berlusconi is expected to appeal. He also faces two other trials for tax fraud and paying for sex with an underage prostitute.
In October last year, Berlusconi was sentenced to a year in jail after had been found guilty in another fraud case. Last night he successfully appealed the sentence for tax fraud.
